  • Welcome to the first grade classroom!   Staff and Information. Room Parents.
  • Your Child at School: 
      • Focus: Academic, Social, and Emotional Growth
        • Academic: mastery of the common core standards.
        • Social: collaborate, communicate, empathy.
        • Emotional: understand, manage, and express emotions of oneself; basic emotions: mad, sad, glad, scared.

 

      • Encourage: Working Together, Community, and Enjoyment and Learning.
  • Your Child at Home:
      • Continued Learning with Family (Homework: Review & Practice).  
      • Read with the Family.
      • Play.

Please complete and return the Reading Interest Survey and “getting to know your child” worksheets by Wednesday August 23.

  • Please arrive at school on time: Tardy is when student is not in line during assembly when the the second bell rings.

 

  • Toys are not allowed in school; including toys hanging on backpacks.

 

  • Weekly Class newsletter & copy of homework packet on the class website (see above). Photos & videos.
  • Green Homework Folder go home and bring back to school everyday.
      • Review Behavior Chart nightly. Focus on the positive with praises and encouragements (and rewards?):

  Green: Made Good Choices

Blue: Made Good Choices and Kind to Others. (Encourage kindness. “be like Jesus” - be kind, forgive, or help someone/group/class)

    Yellow: Think About It (warning)

    Red: Not meeting expectations. Note in folder - requires parent signature

      • Weekly Homework Packet to be completed nightly with family. Green Homework Folder may be checked daily for completion and parent signature. No homework assigned on weekends and holidays.
      • Support your child’s reading skills by reading at home for at least 15 minutes every night.  Have fun reading with/to your child.  Focus on reading, less on skill, and the excitement of reading.  Public Library - borrow and online books.  Get your child interested in reading in first grade: talk about books that your child has read and would like to read. 

 

  • Black Go Home Folder: Every other Fridays; contains completed homework and school work. Return empty folder by Monday.

 

  • Your child is encouraged to bring Reusable Water Bottles into the classroom: big enough to drink for a few hours before refilling. Big opening at the top for easy refilling.  No disposable bottled water to help the environment and avoid spills.  Label the bottle with your child’s name. Heavy bottles may cause injuries to self and others.
  • Parent volunteer in the classroom are welcomed. Be a field trip chaperone volunteer. Field Trips throughout the year.
  • Conferences and Communication
      • Best to call the office to contact me. I rarely check cellphone/text/email during school hours.
      • Informal chat.
      • Individual conferences: we can schedule a time to talk and discuss.
      • Parent/Teacher conference week.

 

  • Student Evaluation
      • Based on Oral and Written work.  I check for Understanding and Accuracy.
      • Students are expected to share ideas with the group and/or the class, complete their work in class and at home, and participate in class discussions and activities.  

 

  • 1 to 1 iPad in the classroom.
  • Christmas Pageant
  • Birthday Celebrations: End of the day celebration. Please refer to the Assumption School Student Handbook for policies regarding student birthday celebrations. 
  • Additional School Supplies may be requested throughout the year. Look for a request in email.

    • Phonics, Decoding words: Rhyme Production, Onset Fluency, Blending Phonemes, Isolating Media Medial Sounds, Segmenting Phonemes, Adding/Deleting Initial Phonemes.
    • Reading: Differentiated Learning. Independent and Guided. Reading Fluency (rate, accuracy, and prosody) and Text Comprehension Skills (strategies, compare and contrast, sequence of events, etc.).  Grammar, Spelling, and Literary Appreciation.

Subject Matter: Students will learn the basic fundamentals of sports (football, baseball, kickball, basketball, soccer, hockey, Lacrosse, volleyball)  along with team building activities in which they will be working in small and large groups. Students will also learn many life lessons that are created during class activities.

 

Expectations: Students will be expected to participate to the best of their ability while showing respect to their classmates as well as their teacher. They are also expected to have as much fun as possible during physical education! 

 

Grading: Students will be graded based on effort, participation, and how they treat others during their physical education classes.
