Volume 7/Issue 8 Assumption Life September 17, 2025
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
The Road to Jericho
God of the Journey,
We all travel a road to Jericho, a path filled with appointments and plans. But along that road lie the unexpected, the interrupted, the wounded.
Still our hurried hearts. When we are tempted to be the priest, focused only on the temple, Remind us that our worship is empty without mercy.
When we are tempted to be the Levite, concerned with our own purity, Remind us that true holiness is found in a helping hand.
Make us, instead, like the Samaritan. Give us the courage to stop. The compassion to see not an enemy, not a stranger, but a fellow human being. The generosity to pour out our own oil and wine, our time and our treasure. The commitment to ensure their journey to healing is complete.
May our lives be the inn that welcomes the weary, and may our love be the payment that promises their care.
Amen.
Together we can
Letting Go
Letting go does not mean abandoning your child. It means allowing your child to learn responsibility and to feel capable.
1) Take small steps in letting go.
2) Take time for training and then step back.
3) Have faith in your child to learn from his or her mistakes.
4) Get a life so your identity doesn't depend on managing your child's life.
Virtue of the month
The Virtue of Respect
Respect means: Speaking and acting according to our own and others' rights, status, and circumstances.
Saintly Spotlight:
St. Damien of Molokai
Our guide for the virtue of respect is St. Damien of Molokai. Fr. Damien was a Belgian missionary priest serving in Hawaii when he heard about the leper colony on the island of Molokai. People treated the lepers like outcasts, forcing them to live on the island without care or enough food or clothing. Damien wanted to take care of the lepers to show them their dignity as children of God. He spent the rest of his life serving these very sick people.

Dear Families and Friends of Assumption School,
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
Our first PTG meeting of the year is this Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Small Hall. Come for the parent hour, stay for the updates, and leave knowing a whole lot more than when you walked in! Wendy Robinson, our fearless Festival Chair, will share how you can get involved (we really do need you). I’ll also give a quick school update and talk about the equitable services provided through San Leandro USD and Oakland USD. Your participation helps us keep those services strong for our kids.
Speaking of the Festival—it’s not hug-a-volunteer week yet, but let’s give a big thank you to the many leads (and Wendy!) already working behind the scenes to make this year’s Peace, Love, and Assumption Festival (yep, 70s theme!) fun and safe. Here’s the link to sign up—we can’t do it without you.
Sports Spotlight Shout-out to CYO Cross Country as they launch their season—go runners! And to CYO Boys Basketball and Girls Volleyball, who are officially back in the gym and on the court. Best of luck to all our athletes this fall!
Faith & Learning at Assumption Our 8th graders stepped up beautifully as leaders during our first Faith Family Mass—such a strong start to the year. Around campus, there’s been no shortage of learning and joy:
-
2nd Grade Book Tasting had students sampling all kinds of books—like a buffet, but with stories.
-
SLT’s Squeaky Clean Trophy is making benches sparkle all over campus.
-
And Campus Ministry’s SLE Wheel is a student favorite (and mine too, let’s be honest).
It’s clear all our kids are already diving into their year of growth!
Looking Ahead: Parent-Teacher Conferences Mark your calendars: Goal-Setting Conferences are October 7–10. Teachers will be sending home schedules next week. These conferences are an important part of our partnership in your child’s education. Early morning and evening options will be available, and we ask that all families schedule during these designated days.
This is a dedicated week for teachers to meet with families, reflect on goals, and celebrate student progress—please plan to join us.
See you this Thursday night—I’ll save you a chair (and maybe some peace, love, and a cookie). Go Valkyries!
With gratitude, Lana Rocheford Principal

Parent/Student Handbook Corner
Late/Missing Work p. 39
In cases where students do not demonstrate sufficient mastery of content standards by the end of the 1st or 2nd Trimester due to late, missing, or incomplete work, a student may receive an “Incomplete” grade until the missing assignments are submitted, allowing the grade to be updated.
If the work is not completed, and there are an insufficient number of summative assessments to show mastery of the content standards by the end of the 3rd Trimester, the following steps will be taken:
- For grades K-5, students will receive a grade of “1”.
- For grades 6-8, students will receive a grade of “F”.
In these cases, the student will not be promoted to the next grade level, nor will they be allowed to re-register for the following school year without completing a summer course of study in the content area, with transcripts provided showing a passing grade.

Hey, congrats! You got to the end. Way to go! Fun fact of the week: Due to a brilliant marketing campaign from 1974, a popular Christmas dinner tradition in Japan is a festive meal from Kentucky Fried Chicken. (Thanks, SLT!)
