Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

What is Hispanic Heritage Month?

From September 15 to October 15, we proudly celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. It is a special time to learn about and honor the people, cultures, and traditions from Spanish-speaking countries. The mid-September start is intentional: it aligns with the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, followed by Mexico and Chile on September 16 and 18, respectively.

Why It Matters to Our Community

Hispanic Heritage Month supports our mission to educate the whole child and create a school where everyone feels included, respected, and valued. What began in 1968 as a weeklong observance has grown into a month-long celebration of the voices, stories, and contributions of Latinx, Latino, Latina, and Hispanic individuals and communities.

About 42% of California’s population identifies as Latino/a - shaping our state through deep contributions to art, education, agriculture, healthcare, and more. By celebrating Hispanic cultures, we honor students’ identities, strengthen connections among families and staff, and deepen our learning together. It’s a time to celebrate diversity and recognize how Hispanic heritage continues to enrich the American story we all share.

How Assumption School is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month:

  • Students in TK-8th grade will explore Hispanic culture in Spanish class with Ms. Contreras, learning about important public figures and how Spanish-speaking countries celebrate their independence.
  • In the library, Ms. Rubio has selected books that highlight Hispanic and Latino/a heritage - like a story about Frida Kahlo - to read during storytime. Students will also enjoy themed coloring and activity sheets which they can take home, and Hispanic and Latino/a books will be featured in a special library display during this month.
  • Some grades may also be doing special activities in their own classrooms. Be sure to ask your child what they’re learning or doing to celebrate.

Bartable published an article highlighting some of the opportunities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the Bay Area. Check it out here

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s take time to appreciate the meaningful contributions of Hispanic and Latin American communities. By learning from one another, showing kindness, and celebrating our many cultures, we make our school stronger, more caring, and more connected - a place where everyone belongs.

All the best,
