Referral Questions? Here's the FAQs people, just the FAQs:
1. What happens before my child receives a referral?
Each teacher has their own discipline/behavior plan in their class. Students will typically receive a couple of verbal warnings. If the undesired behavior continues, a referral might be given.
2. Who can give a referral?
Any staff member can give out a referral.
3. How will I know if my child has received a referral?
Your child will bring home the referral. The staff member or homeroom teacher will contact you, either by phone or email.
4. What do I or my child do with the referral once it comes home?
You will receive a pink and yellow copy of the referral. You sign both copies (it is carbon copy paper), you keep the yellow copy and return the pink one to school with your child. Your child will turn it into their homeroom teacher.
5. How do I follow up with my child at home?
Please have a discussion about the incident which occurred at school. Discuss the importance of following school rules and being respectful to others, based on the incident. No additional consequences are necessary, unless it was agreed upon by the principal.
6. What is the difference between a Category 1 and Category 2 referral?
A Category 1 referral is for minor offenses, such repeated uniform violations, classroom disruptions, playground rule infractions.
A Category 2 referral is for more serious offenses, such as being disrespectful to a teacher, a student or other personnel, dishonest behavior, vandalism, unsafe behavior.
7. What are the consequences for receiving a referral?
For a Category 1 referral, it is just a warning. If your child receives 3 category 1 referrals during a trimester, they will serve a detention.
For a Category 2 referral, your child will serve the detention at the next detention session.
8. Why do we have this referral system?
This system helps the students with their social emotional development, in addition to being a record keeping tool for the school and method of communication with you.
9. Are these referrals part of my child’s permanent record?
No, these referrals do not go into their file. They are secured in a different location for record keeping purposes for the staff, only.
10. If my student receives a Category 2 referral, what is the next step?
The school has an after school detention on the Tuesday after the infraction in a determined classroom for 15 minutes for TK through 3rd Grade (3:15 - 3:30) and 30 minutes for 4th through 8th grade students (3:15 - 3:45). Parents will pick up the students at the end of the detention or your child will be signed into Extended Care. If the student misses the detention, additional consequences will take place. The location and date of the detention is on the referral.
