Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
Novena in Memory of Pope Benedict XVI, Seventh Day, January 11
This novena has been prepared to help pray for the Pope Emeritus during this time. The daily novena – lasting from his funeral on Thursday, January 5 through Friday, January 13 – consists of a short reading from Scripture or some other ecclesiastical text and some brief prayers, including orations drawn from the Roman Missal and the Order of Christian Funerals.
Peter: The First of the Apostles
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
Jesus summoned his Twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. The names of the Twelve Apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus; Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him. (10:1-4)
O God, faithful rewarder of souls,
grant that your departed servant Pope (Emeritus) Benedict, whom you made successor of Peter and shepherd of your Church, may happily enjoy for ever in your presence in heaven the mysteries of your grace and compassion, which he faithfully ministered on earth.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Special prayer intentions for the McConnell Family, the Lobo Family, Brehm Family, Yang Family, and all those in our community suffering from the recent rains.
Together we can
Give compliments.
Compliments and appreciations bring us closer together.
Focus on accomplishments and helpfulness to others:
- “I appreciate how quickly you get dressed and ready for school.”
- “I notice how kindly you cared for Anna when she felt sad. I bet it helped her feel better.”
- “Thank you for setting the table.”

Dear Friends and Families of Assumption School,
After an amazing Christmas pageant in December, first graders are really taking an active role in being faith leaders! Today, our first graders led the community in liturgy for the first time! We are so proud of how they actively participated, read scripture, led prayer, and presented the gifts of the Mass. A few of our 8th graders also shared their Faith Family saint reflections as a way to connect our school community with the readings of the day, the saints in our faith, and lessons we can learn. Thank you to our 8th graders and Mr. Vaughan who has worked to bring saint reflections to all the school Masses. It is these moments that make me a proud principal, parent, and parishioner!
There will be a minimum day on Thursday for our WCEA work day and no school on Friday for an Oakland Diocese professional development day. We will also be closed on Monday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. Next Wednesday, our school will host our annual Social Justice Mass at 8:30 a.m. in honor of Dr. King and his legacy. The City of San Leandro is hosting a free oratorical fest and poetry slam on January 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the Marina Community Center (15301 Wicks Blvd.) Maybe you might have time to attend this event, as it would help our students understand the importance of this holiday.
The month of January is an important month for prospective and current families that would like to enroll new students for the 2023-2024 school year. We are very excited to already have great interest in our programs with the most applications already on file in the four years I have been principal. We are grateful for your continued positive word-of-mouth to your neighbors, families, and friends. We are especially looking for prospective students in our incoming TK, 4th, 6th, and 7th grades. We have limited space in our kindergarten through third grades and fifth grade. We are only accepting waitlist applications for our 8th grade.
Feel free to send our online application to your families, friends, and even former daycare communities if they are interested in our school. You can also invite them to our Catholic Schools Week Open House on January 29 from 11:30 - 2 p.m. We are welcoming current and prospective families onto our campus to see our classroom displays, learn about the great learning taking place, and to talk with each other about being a part of this wonderful community. New families can register for our Open House here! Are you a current parent with a school-age sibling? Siblings are on our admissions first priority! Apply now!
We are excited to continue to grow our enrollment which keeps programs growing, tuition rates reasonable, and our community flourishing!
Thank you for all you do! Together we can do great things!
Sincerely,
Lana Rocheford
Principal

Congratulations! You made it to the end. Your reward? Here you go! Fun facts about rain from Forbes, Odd Facts about Rain by Marshall Shepherd:
Raindrops are shaped more like hamburger buns. As a rain drop falls, it becomes less spherical in shape and becomes more flattened on the bottom like a hamburger bun. This is primarily related to their fall speed.
Yep, rain does have a smell. Petrichor is the word that describes the scent of rain. If we want to be technically correct, however, it describes an oil released from the Earth. The word is apparently derived from the Greek words "petra" (stones of the Earth) and "ichor." Ichor is from Greek mythology and is related to the blood of the gods. The basic chemistry of the process is related to decomposed organic material fused with soil, rock, and minerals in an interesting chemical brew.
Even though it is raining where you are, it probably started as snow. In many places, the Bergeron or "cold rain" process is responsible for the formation of rain (even on a hot summer day). Clouds are often a mixture of ice crystals and super-cooled water drops, and some interesting things happen because of that fact.
Rain may worsen Asthma. Intuitively, you might think that rain would lessen suffering from asthma. However, research led by my colleague Dr. Andrew Grunstein along with colleagues at the University of Georgia and Emory University have added to the body of literature that thunderstorms can trigger asthma response. I was also a part of one of the studies. The hypothesis are still not conclusive, but the thinking is that winds associated with thunderstorms lift pollen and mold spores. The rainfall bursts the particles into smaller aero-allergens that can get into the lungs. The thunderstorm downdrafts then spread the particles.
