Volume 4/Issue 15 Assumption Life
November 16, 2022
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
To be grateful is to recognize
The love of God in everything
He has given us –
And He has given us everything.
Every breath we draw
Is a gift of His love,
Every moment of existence
Is a grace,
For it brings immense graces from Him
– Thomas Merton
Together we can
Create Agreements
- Have a discussion where each person gets to voice feelings and thoughts on the issue.
- Brainstorm solutions and choose one everyone can agree to.
- Agree on a specific time deadline.
- If agreement is not followed, avoid judgment and criticism. Use nonverbal signals or ask “What was our agreement?”
- If agreement still is not followed, start again at step 1.
Drop Off in the morning REMINDER
Assumption School prides itself on keeping members of our community safe but needs your partnership to do so.
I have made an announcements to students at morning assembly that ALL PEDESTRIANS using the outer parish parking lot MUST USE THE FULTON STREET SIDEWALK BY THE CHURCH AND RECTORY and WALKTHROUGH GATE BY THE SECOND GRADE DURING MORNING DROP OFF.
Drop off for school begins at 7:40 a.m. All students dropped off before 7:40 a.m. will be brought to Extended Care except for SLT members who are supervised by the SLT moderator. Please note if you are dropping off your student ANYTIME before 7:40 a.m. you will be charged Extended Care fees billed by the ½ hour.
PEDESTRIAN GUIDELINES
- On Fulton Street: Use the sidewalk by the church and the walkthrough gate by 2nd grade to enter the school from the outer parking lot. DO NOT use the pathway along the black wrought-iron gate OR the school’s exit driveway as this pedestrian path has a significant blind spot that puts pedestrians in danger.
- Parents planning on staying for assembly should park in the basketball courts or as directed by staff and walk to the identified crosswalk (the cones) to cross traffic. A staff member will stop traffic to cross you at that point.
- On School Street: Use the walkthrough gate by the Science Lab. Do not block traffic in the neighborhood.
DRIVING GUIDELINES
- Please DRIVE SLOWLY. Our Morning Drop Off has a BLIND SPOT in the parish parking lot.
- A staff member will be stationed to help direct traffic as needed by the school carpool exit area in the morning starting tomorrow.
- STAY IN THE VEHICLE LINE DURING CARLINE. FOLLOW THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. Do not swerve around the line to leave the parking lot or leave through the arrival gate. If you are unable to wait in the line, please legally park in the outer lot, walk to the classroom, and pick up your student.
- Pro-tip: once we get the car line really going good … if you arrive at around 3:10 p.m., you can usually drive right up with no wait. If your child says they are getting picked up and you are not later than 3:15 in the parking lot, students will not be signed into Extended Care.
- SHARE WITH THE ANYONE WHO PICKS UP OR DROPS OFF YOUR STUDENT.

Parent Hours Alert
Parent Volunteer and Fundraising Statements for the FIRST TRIMESTER will be sent home December 7, 2022. Don’t wait to see how many hours you have left, just volunteer now!
SCHOOL SUNDAY MASS THIS SUNDAY:
If you attend any of our calendared Sunday school-sponsored Masses including SUNDAY (11/20/22) at 10 a.m. hosted by 5th Grade. If your students wear their school uniform, you can earn a parent hour and your student earns a free dress. All are welcome.
How does it work:
- Plan to attend the 10 a.m. Mass in-person with your student in FULL UNIFORM.
- At the end of the Mass, look for a staff person (or Mrs. Rocheford) who will have Free Dress Passes to give to students.
- Place your LAST NAME and Grade(s) on the Free Dress Pass.
- The student turns in the free dress pass on the ASSIGNED SCHOOL MASS FREE DRESS DAY on the PASS to your students' teacher to count you as a family who participated. (only one hour per family not per student).
Small print: Only in-person school- or class-sponsored Assumption Parish Sunday Masses count toward service hours. Those masses are on our school calendar and are usually twice a month.

Dear Family and Friends,
It was SO fun last night to interact with the prospective families for TK and Kindergarten at our annual TK/K Social. Thank you to all our current families who came to talk with our prospective families about this great community. Thanks also to Ms. Sabrina and Ms. Robles for being the great teachers they are but also taking that extra time after a long work day to plan this event. Also, I am so happy that our 7th and 8th grade students did an AMAZING job running stations, serving food, and talking with families about the school. Thank you to everyone who helped this effort. The admissions process will open up for ALL families of prospective students on December 16, 2022. We are excited about the continued interest in Assumption School in our community.
If you can believe it, next week is Thanksgiving! We are looking forward to our annual Thanksgiving prayer service next Tuesday and invite you to come at 11 a.m. for this ½ hour service hosted by Campus Ministry. Next Tuesday is also a noon dismissal. Then off to enjoy some turkey … more pumpkin pie … some sweet potatoes … green beans … ohhhh, I am HUNGRY!
We return on Monday, November 28, celebrating our first week of Advent and the start of preparing for the coming of Jesus and Christmas! This means there will be LOTS of fun, LOTS of prayer, and LOTS of opportunities to learn and get into the season!
St. Nicks Boutique is right around the corner and I would like to take this opportunity to share that this is one of our FAVORITE events at Assumption School. This labor of love will benefit TWO wonderful organizations based in San Leandro that supports low-income families - Davis Street Preschool and Building Futures.
School families and our community donate gently used items. Students attend a St. Nick’s Boutique to shop for loved ones and all the proceeds go to these two organizations that help those who are underserved in our community. The St. Nick’s Boutique committee also offers parents a mini-auction and is looking for donations for the community to bid in an online auction, which raises additional funds but is a way for our community to get in on the action!. I have lost MANY a bid to some quick bidders! All these fun activities are highlighted in the News below. Please look for ways to donate gently used items as potential gifts for dads, moms, grandparents, pets, and siblings. Also, the team is hoping for some great donated auction baskets to help make their efforts a success! They are also looking for volunteers (service hours, anyone?) to set up in the gym, sort donations, and man the event on December 2.
Thank you for your support! As I pray about the importance of gratitude, I am reminded as always to thank you, our friends and supporters, who make this place a wonderful place to be.
Sincerely,
Lana Rocheford
Principal

Joining our Liturgies as non-Catholic
We love welcoming our non-Catholic parents, families and friends to our religious services, called Mass or Liturgy, regularly to watch their students sing, share reflections, or read from scripture. The public speaking opportunities for our students at Mass help them in so many different ways – most importantly about being a part of a faith community. We enjoy and encourage all our students to learn and celebrate with us during this time.
A reminder for our non-Catholic friends that the Eucharist (breaking and sharing of unleavened bread consecrated as the body of Christ) is a sacred sacrament which takes place during the Catholic Mass. During the service of Mass, prayers are said and Catholics confess their sins. They are given bread by the priest and wine. Transubstantiation is a Catholic belief that the bread and the wine become the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ.
All who attend Mass are invited to participate in different ways. As a mutual respect for all beliefs, we ask those students, parents, and friends that are non-Catholic or have not participated in the Sacrament of First Eucharist to come to the ministers for a blessing during the Celebration of a Eucharist (close to the end of the service). They show this by crossing their arms over their chests. The ministers offer a blessing. A slight bow of the head in acknowledgement or saying “Amen” is welcome.
We are grateful for the opportunity to share our faith. If you are non-Catholic and would like to become a part of the Catholic Church, you can contact Assumption Parish for more information at (510) 352-1537.
Report Cards for First Trimester given out on November 30
A reminder that First Trimester Report Cards will be passed out on Wednesday, November 30 to your students. Inside the report card envelope will be the First Trimester Report Card, End of Trimester STAR assessment parent reports, and for those with excessive tardies, a tardy notification.
According to our handbook, excessive tardiness is being late four (4) times per trimester. It is so important to make sure and arrive at school by 7:55 a.m. Students are considered late when the 8 a.m. bell rings and they are not at their assembly lines. Our carline opens at 7:45 a.m. and flows smoothly but does get congested at 7:55 a.m. Parking in our assembly parking area and walking your student to assembly is welcome. Please plan accordingly.
