Hi Assumption Families!
My name is Ms. Regina Hammond and I am thrilled to join your community as the 4-8th grade science teacher at Assumption.
A bit about me:
I was born in Chicago but grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and I recently graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Neuroscience and Behavior. Out of the classroom, I enjoy photography, hiking, and spending time outdoors, and I have loved exploring the Bay Area.
As a Catholic school teacher, this faith-based environment allows the classroom to have a culture of Christlike love. Every student has inherent dignity and unique gifts, and I am so eager to get to know them and support them. My foundation for this vocation has taught me that the best way to teach is through modeling virtues like curiosity, critical thinking, and compassion. I aim to create a classroom environment that fosters kindness and a passion for learning, especially about such a diverse range of science topics. Please reach out to me with any questions, comments, or concerns and know that I am here to support this community however I can.
About Science for Upper Grades:
The text, expectations, and grading are consistent across the grade levels.
Text: FOSS Kits by Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley
Expectations:
Students will be expected to complete daily tasks, quizzes, exit tickets, tests, investigations, demonstrations and presentations. Students are expected to come to class ready to engage in class discussions, prepared by completing any assigned tasks, and bringing any required materials to class each day. Students should arrive to class ready to collaborate with their peers, deeply investigate, and to learn about the many wonders of science!
Grading: Grades will be based on daily class participation, tests, quizzes, projects, and completion of homework. Homework and assignments must be turned in on time.
Listed below is a brief overview of each science grade. Each grade is integrated science, so it is not only focusing on life science, physical science, or earth science, but rather a combination of them all.
Fourth Grade Science
Throughout the year, we will be going over topics relating Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science through guided discovery and inquiry. In fourth grade, we will have a particular focus on the Structures of Life, Energy, and Solids, Rocks and Landforms.
Fifth Grade Science
Throughout the year, we will be covering numerous domains within the field of science to help better understand the world around us. Through guided discovery and inquiry, we will cover topics within Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science. In fifth grade, we will have a particular focus on photosynthesis, ecosystems, properties of matter, gravity, the Earth's spheres and its place in the universe, and human impact on the environment and on the Earth.

Throughout the year, we will be covering numerous domains within the field of science to help better understand the world around us. Through guided discovery and inquiry, we will cover topics within Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science. In sixth grade, we will have a particular focus on cells, the nervous system, inheritance and heredity, evolution, energy transfer, weather and climate, and on human's impact on the environment.
Seventh Grade Science
Throughout the year, we will be going over topics related to Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science. We will have a particular focus on Photosynthesis, Ecosystems, the Cycling of Earth’s Materials, Natural Hazards, Chemical Reactions, and Phases of Matter.
Eighth Grade Science
Throughout the year, we will be covering numerous domains within the field of science to help better understand the world around us. Through guided discovery and inquiry, we will cover topics within Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science. In eighth grade, we will have a particular focus on population genetics, evolution, the solar system, energy and Newton’s Laws, forces, and waves.
