Volume 7/Issue 7 Assumption Life September 10,, 2025
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
Hail Holy Queen
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry,
poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this our exile
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving,
O sweet Virgin Mary.
Amen
Together we can
Kind AND Firm
It is the AND that brings kind AND firm together to avoid extremes.
Begin by validating feelings and/or showing understanding. Offer a choice when possible. Examples:
1) I know you don't want to brush your teeth, AND we can do it together.
2) You want to keep playing, AND it is time for bed. Do you want one story or two?
3) I love you, AND the answer is, No.
Virtue of the month
The Virtue of Respect
Respect means: Speaking and acting according to our own and others' rights, status, and circumstances
Respect Looks Like:
- Only saying nice things about your siblings and classmates
- Not laughing at others
- Listening the first time and discontinuing an action when someone asks you to stop
- Kissing a crucifix
- Listening attentively to others
Respect Sounds Like:
- He is really good at...
- It is not nice to laugh at people.
- Silence, I will stop doing that.
- Silence.

Dear Friends and Family of Assumption School,
Our Festival 101 new parent workshop on Tuesday was a wonderful success. A big thank you to Wendy Robinson, who leads our Fall Festival, for helping our new families understand just how fun and meaningful it is to be part of this tradition. The Assumption Fall Festival is October 3–5, and it is truly one of the best weekends of the school year. There are still opportunities to chair a booth, volunteer, and support this beloved event while earning your service hours. We can’t wait to gather together for a weekend filled with love, peace, and community.
We are also preparing to say farewell to Fr. Julius, who will celebrate his final school Mass with us on September 15 before returning to the Philippines later that evening. Our students created the sweetest cards to thank him, and we will hold him in our prayers as he continues his journey of faith and service.
Tomorrow is September 11, and we pause as a community to remember the lives lost, honor the courage of first responders, and reflect on the importance of building peace in our world. May this day encourage us all to live with gratitude, compassion, and hope.
This Friday, September 12, there will be no school as all Catholic school faculty and staff from across the Diocese of Oakland gather at the Cathedral for a day of professional development and Mass with Bishop Barber. This is a special opportunity for our teachers to grow in their vocation and share in the wider Catholic school community.
Today our students participated in their first Faith Family activity of the year, creating prayer chains that will hang on their pews at Mass next week. It was beautiful to see students of all ages come together in prayer and connection. We also held our first emergency fire drill of the year, and we are proud to report that it took only 2 minutes and 23 seconds to evacuate safely and calmly. Our faculty and students worked together with confidence, and it’s clear that practicing routines makes a big difference.
As our students continue to settle into the school year, teachers are helping them understand expectations and guiding them toward success. Families can support this important work at home by keeping routines consistent, asking children about their day, modeling respect, and celebrating their efforts. These small steps create a big impact and help strengthen the bridge between home and school.
Every day I feel grateful to be part of this faith-filled, supportive, and joyful community. Thank you for your partnership and for the many ways you help make Assumption School such a special place.
Love,
Lana Rocheford
Principal

Parent/Student Handbook Corner
Referral Slips - page 55
Referral Slips
To promote a safe and respectful learning environment, Assumption School uses a behavior referral system to monitor and address student conduct. Referral slips may be issued at the discretion of any supervising staff member—whether during class, recess, lunch, or school events.
When a referral is issued, the following process is followed:
- Notification: An email will be sent to the student’s parent or guardian to inform them of the referral. This supports transparency and ensures that the student communicates the incident at home.
- Parent Communication: If parents have questions or concerns regarding a referral, they are encouraged to contact the staff member who issued it and include the student’s homeroom teacher in the communication. A parent signature on the referral acknowledges receipt, not agreement with its contents, and the absence of a signature does not negate that the referral was issued.
- Student Responsibility: The student must take the referral slip home, have it signed by a parent/guardian, and return it to the homeroom teacher the following school day. If the slip is not returned within two days, the school will follow up with the family.
While a single referral does not necessarily result in disciplinary action, it serves as a documentation point and opportunity for growth. If a pattern of referrals emerges, a behavior support plan may be developed in partnership with the student, parents, teachers, and administration.
Categories and Consequences:
- Category One Offenses: Upon receiving a third Category One referral, the student will be required to serve the next available detention. Families will be notified by phone.
- Category Two Offenses: A single Category Two referral results in an automatic detention.
- Detention Logistics: Detention is held on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. Students are expected to attend on the assigned date. (unless otherwise noted)
- Missed Detentions: If a student misses detention without prior approval, a phone call will be made to the parent or guardian, and the student will be required to attend detention for the next two consecutive weeks.
This system is designed to support student accountability, foster communication between home and school, and guide students in making responsible choices.

Hey, congrats! You got to the end. Way to go! Fun fact of the day (thanks, SLT!): Vatican City holds the title as the world's smallest country, with an area of just 0.17 square mile (0.44 square km). As a point of comparison, the largest country in the world, Russia, is almost 39 million times bigger.
