Volume 6/Issue 28 Assumption Life March. 5, 2025
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
Each Wednesday of Lent, we’ll share a 3-minute retreat for prayer and reflection on your computer or phone. Pause to reflect on the Scripture and use the arrows to move at your own pace.
Ash Wednesday 3 minute retreat - Marked with Salvation
O God of second chances, thankfully you give us this time during Lent to be filled, directed and empowered by your Spirit. As we enter fully into Lent, show us what we need to see to more fully follow your Gospel. What in our lives needs the anointing of your Spirit? What in our lives needs clarity on the direction we are being invited to? What in our lives do we need strength to feel empowered to go out and do in your name?
We seek to be filled, directed and empowered by your Spirit, O God of second chances, to overcome the temptations in our own lives as your Son overcame the temptations in the desert. We seek to be filled and directed by your Spirit as we go out into our public ministries, as Jesus was directed to do after his time alone with you.
-Becky Eldredge, Spiritual Director and Author
Together we can
Take Time for Training
Training is an important part of teaching children life skills.
Don't expect children to know what to do without step-by-step training. What do you mean by clean?
1) Kindly explain the task as you perform it, while your child watches.
2) Do the task together.
3) Have your child do it by herself while you supervise.
4) When she feels ready let her perform the task on her own.
Virtue of the week
Self Control
Also known as: Discipline
Definition of Self-control: Joyful mastery over one's passions and desires
Prayer for Self-control:
Dear Jesus, Thank You for all the desires You have given me, because they remind me of the desire in my heart that only You can fill! Help me to control my tongue when I am supposed to be silent; my hands when I am supposed to keep them to myself; my eyes when I am supposed to be focused on a particular person or thing; and my ears to listen to only those things I am supposed to hear.
Self-control Looks Like:
- Raising your hand before talking in class
- Walking in a straight line
- Keeping your hands to yourself
- Not taking an extra cookie
- Listening to others while they speak; not interrupting them
Self-control Sounds Like:
- I will raise my hand before I speak.
- Silence
- I will keep my hands to myself.
- I will only take one cookie even if I want more than one.
- Silence. I will listen while you are speaking.

Dear Friends and Families of Assumption School,
As we enter the sacred season of Lent, we are reminded of our call to pray, fast, and give. These three pillars guide us in deepening our relationship with God and others—through prayer, we seek closeness with God; through fasting, we practice self-discipline and awareness of others' needs; and through giving, we extend love and generosity to our community. Each of our classes embraced this sense of renewal by attending Ash Wednesday Mass this morning, receiving ashes as a sign of repentance and our desire to turn our hearts toward God. The ashes remind us of our human frailty—“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”—and call us to renewal through faith.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all who participated in and supported our Masquerade Mardi Gras Gala last Saturday. This incredible evening brought together friends and parents of Assumption School to raise vital funds for our school's operating budget and future projects, including replacing our 70-year-old boiler with a split-system HVAC. Many of you had the joy of hearing Mrs. Bass’ firsthand account of life with the old boiler—complete with an impromptu beat-box performance when the boiler reaches its peak! This year’s Fund-a-Need for the HVAC system raised an amazing $18,900, with generous paddle raises of $5,000, $2,500, $1,000, $500, $250, and $100. Our goal is to reach $25,000 this year, adding to last year’s $25,000, as we pursue grant opportunities to cover the full $325,000 cost. We have extended the Fund-a-Need campaign and invite our community to help us achieve our goal. Every contribution makes a difference!
I also want to share my deep appreciation for another major Fund-a-Need success—our new outdoor speaker and microphone system! A single, incredibly generous $8,000 pledge fully funded this project, replacing the unreliable system used by our Student Leadership Team. We anticipate this new system will be installed by the end of April!
Exciting opportunities remain with our Pay-to-Plays, open until 10 a.m. this Thursday, March 6! Don’t miss out on fun experiences like the ‘90s Hip Hop Brunch for adults (let’s gooo!), the beloved Night of Korean Food and Live Music, Tacos and Ritas, and the ever-popular Notecard Class Item—where, for just $40, you can collect 15 greeting cards featuring your child’s artwork from TK to 8th grade. These unique keepsakes are a beautiful way to preserve and share your child’s creativity over the years. Click here to buy your items!
Looking ahead, we send our 6th graders off next week to Caritas Creek Outdoor Ministry Camp, accompanied by Ms. Campbell and our parent cabin leaders. This trip is a cherished rite of passage, allowing students to connect with God while immersed in the beauty of the redwoods. Please keep them in your prayers! As is our tradition, we will send off our 6th graders as a whole school community at about 9 a.m. on Monday morning. We expect to see our 6th grade parents shed a tear when they leave!
It has been a joy-filled and eventful week with so many enriching experiences for our students: the Gala, Academic Decathlon, International Day, Read Across America, Ash Wednesday, and the start of Lent. And the excitement continues—this Thursday, our 4th graders will embark on their annual Amtrak adventure to Old Sacramento for a step back in time!
Thank you for your continued support, faith, and generosity. May this Lenten season bring you and your families peace, reflection, and renewal.
With gratitude and blessings,
Lana Rocheford
Principal
