Volume 6/Issue 26 Assumption Life Feb. 19, 2025
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
A Familiar Prayer – (J. G. St. Clair Drake) – 1940
Oh Lord, we come this morning knee bowed and body bent before thy throne of grace. We come this morning Lord, like empty pitchers before a full fountain, realizing that many who are better by nature than we are by practice, have passed into the great beyond and yet you have allowed us your humble servants to plod along just few days longer here in this howling wilderness. We thank thee Lord that when we arose this morning, our bed was not a cooling board, and our sheet was not a winding shroud. We are not gathered here for form or fashion, but we come in our humble way to serve thee. … And when I have done prayed my last prayer and sung my last song, and when I’m done climbing the rough side of the mountain, when I come down to tread the steep and prickly banks of Jordan, meet me with thy rod and staff and bear me safely over. All these things I ask in Jesus’ name, world without end, Amen.
As a Catholic community, we lift Pope Francis in prayer, asking for his continued healing and strength as he recovers.
Together we can
Special Time
Schedule special time that is different from regular time.
1) Take the phone off the hook.
2) Take turns choosing an activity you both enjoy from a list you have brainstormed together.
3) Age Guidelines:
- 2-6 years old: 10 min./day
- 7-12: at least 30 min./week
- 13 and older: once a month something your teen can't resist
Virtue of the week
Magnificence
Definition: Undertaking great things, using money, time, and talents to their full potential.
Magnificence Looks Like:
Using your talents for good
Magnificence Sounds Like:
Let's build a house for a family in need.
Practicing magnificence:
- I give my all to whatever I’m doing.
- I undertake projects or activities that will use my gifts positively.
- I use my time constructively.
Prayer:
Dear Jesus, help me to see the gifts you have given me, to be grateful for them, and to develop and use them well. Please give me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and confidently share my gifts, not for my own glory, but for Yours, and the good of others.
Amen.

Parent Handbook Corner
Communicable Diseases
Assumption School follows COVID 19 policies in accordance with CDC, California Department of Public Health, Alameda County Department of Public Health, and/or the Diocese of Oakland. Any additional information or updates will be shared with all stakeholders through our school newsletter updates and posted to our website.
All communicable diseases should be reported to the school office upon discovery. A doctor’s note must be submitted upon the student’s return. Such diseases include coronavirus, polio, ringworm, smallpox, scarlet fever, strep throat, tetanus, whooping cough, impetigo, lice, mononucleosis, and pink eye, etc.
Many illnesses are most contagious before diagnosis. If the child is kept home at the first sign of illness, fewer children are exposed and the sick child will also benefit. Suspicious signs are the same for many diseases: chills, fever, headache, aching back, swollen neck glands, tight and dry cough, or runny nose. Please keep children home if they seem ill and do not permit them to return to school until they are “fever free” for a period of twenty-four hours.
Upon a student’s return, a written excuse dated and signed by a parent must be submitted explaining the reason for the absence.

Dear Friends and Family of Assumption School,
We are eagerly anticipating our Masquerade Gala on March 1! We have our final count and are getting ready to PARTY all in an effort to support our school! A heartfelt thank you to our incredible room parents who have worked so hard to provide amazing auction items. Among them, we have a beautiful chess board made from student art, stunning butterfly artwork, an awesome dart board, and so much more! We also appreciate the efforts put into the Class Auction Baskets, which will be raffled off to students who purchase raffle tickets. Your support and participation help make this event a success.
In academics, STAR screening for the Second Trimester has started in classrooms this week. Your student’s homeroom teacher will be preparing for the STAR screening in reading and math. Please check your emails for the specific STAR schedule from your child’s teacher. To help your child do their best, ensure they get plenty of rest and eat a healthy breakfast. These assessments provide valuable insight into student progress, and as a faculty, we carefully review the results to refine our instruction. The administration also uses this data to set long-term goals for the school. The testing window will close on February 28.
This week, we also extend a warm welcome to our prospective new families! Admissions letters are being sent out, and we are excited to grow our school community. We have waiting lists in many grades and want to remind our current families to complete their online registration through PowerSchool as soon as possible. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter, ensuring a smooth transition into the next academic year.
Finally, congratulations to all our winter CYO sports teams, especially those who have made it to their division or diocesan playoff season! A special shout-out to our 5th and 8th grade boys’ basketball teams and our 6th and 8th grade girls’ volleyball teams. We are so proud of all our athletes who have represented our parish and school with great spirit and dedication. Congrats for the end of an amazing season.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!
Love,
Lana Rocheford
Principal

Hey, congrats! You got to the end. Way to go! Interesting fact: John Gibbs St. Clair Drake (1911 - 1990) was a pioneering black social anthropologist and activist, one of only nine black anthropologists before WWII. He dedicated his scholarship – ethnographic studies of race, class, and social structure – to the eradication of social inequalities and racial injustice.
