Volume 6/Issue 21 Assumption Life Jan. 15, 2025
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
Holy God. This week, we remember Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s struggle for equality, justice, and dignity for African Americans that inspired so many other reform movements that seek to highlight the plight of the oppressed in society.
We pray that all of those in civil and religious authority be reminded that we all have been created in your image, and that there is an intrinsic dignity in each of us that calls for uplifting every man and woman, young and old.
We pray that your Holy Spirit remind us all that you show no partiality with regards to nationality, race, ethnicity, or gender, and to do so is to go against your great commandment of love toward one another.
We pray that the church will not be complicit of injustice by being silent, but that it can rise up with a prophetic voice that speaks truth to power and advances the values of your Kingdom.
We pray these things in the name of our blessed redeemer, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Together we can
Routines
Help children create routine charts to encourage self-discipline,
1) Create routine charts WITH your child.
2) Brainstorm tasks that need to be done (bedtime, morning, homework, etc.).
3) Take pictures of child doing each task.
4) Let the routine chart be the boss:
"What is next on your routine chart?"
5) Do not take away from feelings of capability by adding rewards.
Virtue of the week
Industriousness
Definition: diligence; working hard in the time given for it; valuing time so as to use the moments of one’s life purposefully and meaningfully.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, You have given me the gift of this day, the gift of this moment. Help me to use my time well. Give me the grace to do all for Your greater glory.
Opposing trait:
Giving in to a lack of motivation to complete one’s responsibilities; being lazy
Ways to cultivate:
- I give my full attention and energy to the task at hand.
- I use every moment well.
- I see free time as a gift and spend it accordingly.

RE-REGISTRATION
In February of each year re-registration of all returning families takes place. The non-refundable registration for the first child in the family is due at this time. This involves a holding fee, which saves the student’s place at Assumption. If the registration fee is not received in February, the student’s name will be removed from the class list.
All online registration/enrollment paperwork must be completed and provided to the school office by the set due date.
Applications are open in late November for the following school year. Testing for students applying in grades 1 - 8 is in early February. Interviews also occur during February for Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten entry.

Dear Friends and Families of Assumption School:
My heart is with all the families affected by the fires down south. We will need to keep our brothers and sisters down in the Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, and LA areas as well as those in our own area traveling down to fight those fires in prayer during this crisis. In this time, the beauty of community has been the silver lining -- the firefighters and first responders but also the people just wanted to help out. If you would like to support fire victims, please click on this news article which shares best practices and vetted organizations to help.
This month, classrooms are honoring the work, life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in their lessons and in their service to the community. Please take a moment to remember his “struggle for equality, justice, and dignity for African Americans that inspired so many other reform movements that seek to highlight the plight of the oppressed in society.” (Bread for the World 2023). By remembering his work, we move forward as a society to fulfill his dream.
Last weekend, our 8th graders applying to Catholic High Schools took their High School Placement Exam and they all are in the final stages of their application process. Junior high teachers spent time in December practicing with students in preparation for the exam. We keep them all in prayer as they continue through this process.
Next week, our school will be hosting the Scholastic Book Faire which funds our school library. This is a cashless event which requires an E-wallet printout for students to use when they don’t have parents. It has a barcode that they use to check out and you can get here. The book faire will be open to students and families during the week starting on Tuesday, January 21 in the Small Hall and lasting the whole week. Parents can use their own credit cards or debit cards to make purchases.
I want to invite you all again to share the good news of Assumption School to our community, friends, and families with school-aged children! Feel free to send our website and online application to your communities including former daycare communities! Our Open House is an event that would be a perfect opportunity to see who we are about! All learning areas will be open and available for visitors including YOU to see work samples and talk to teachers.
Catholic Schools Week Open House is on January 26 starting with a 10 a.m. Mass at the Church of the Assumption. Our school opens to our community at 11:30 a.m. with a Prospective Parent Meeting in the Math Lab at 11:45 a.m. Classrooms will be open starting at 11:45 a.m. as well. A menu of interesting exhibits will be shared next week.
Next Wednesday, students will be receiving their Trimester 2 Progress Reports at the end of the day. Please review their progress and return the report signed by Thursday. Thank you for your partnership!
We are so grateful for all you do!
Sincerely,
Lana Rocheford
Principal

Martin Luther King Jr. and Pope Francis - November 9, 2015

In this final installment, we examine the life and legacy of the great civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Hey, congrats! You got to the end. Way to go! Fun fact: Animals can experience time differently from humans. To smaller animals, the world around them moves more slowly compared to humans. Salamanders and lizards, for example, experience time more slowly than cats and dogs. This is because the perception of time depends on how quickly the brain can process incoming information.
