Volume 6/Issue 9 Assumption Life October 16, 2024
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
Great Spirit Prayer
Oh, Great Spirit, Whose voice I hear in the winds and whose breath gives life to all the world. Hear me! I need your strength and wisdom. Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever hold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice. Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people. Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.
Help me remain calm and strong in the face of all that comes towards me. Help me find compassion without empathy overwhelming me. I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy: myself. Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes. So when life fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame.
- Translated by Lakota Sioux Chief Yellow Lark in 1887
- Together we can
Logical Consequences
Too often logical consequences are poorly disguised punishments.
1) Use consequences rarely. Instead, focus on solutions.
2) When appropriate, follow the Three Rs and an H of Logical Consequences:
- Related
- Respectful
- Reasonable
- Helpful
3) If any of these are missing it is not a logical consequence.
Virtue of the Week
Foresight
Definition: Consideration of the consequences of one's actions; thinking ahead.
Opposing trait: Failing to consider later consequences.
Ways to cultivate: Pray, think, act: learn how to gather information, to make a decision; plan out long-term and short-term goals.

Student/Parent Handbook Corner
Late or Missing Work p. 38
- Late/Missing Work
If there are an insufficient number of summative assessments to show mastery of content standards by the end of the 1st or 2nd Trimester due to late, missing or incomplete work then a student can receive an “Incomplete” until the work is turned in and the grade can be updated. If the work is not completed and there are an insufficient number of summative assessments to show mastery of content standards by the end of the 3rd trimester, students in grades K-5 would receive a “1” and students in grades 6-8 would receive an “F”. In these cases, the student would not be promoted or allowed to re-register without completing a summer course of study (transcripts provided) showing a passing grade in the content area. The only other option would be “Transferring” the student to the next grade after consultation with the Department of Catholic Schools and a discussion and written letter to the parents of what this means (the student has not completed the grade level course of study but is being moved to the next grade).

Dear Friends and Family of Assumption School,
Thank you for your partnership with conferences. We now have goals and expectations that your student is likely ready to tackle. It may feel like a lot for them especially knowing that their team -- you, me, and their teachers -- are holding them accountable to keep those goals. It's a good thing but it can feel daunting for your child.
At today's morning all school mass, Fr. Fernando spoke to us about the importance of realizing that Jesus walks with us even when we are expected to do so much and it feels hard. Actually, that is the time when He is most with us, to show us it gets better, and that through hard work and God's love, we can be the best versions of what He hopes we can be. I feel this can resonate with kids today.
We see that students are struggling with the pressures and expectations of school, extracurriculars, friends, and chores. Today, the Gospel tells us that all that stuff might not go away but if we realize that Jesus is there to help lift those burdens, it feels like we are able to face them with hope and a desire to try. As parents, we sometimes forget that we have Jesus in our lives too and by modeling our own "give it to Him" attitude maybe we can help our kids learn how to manage life's burdens as they grow into amazing teens and adults. And it all starts with our students' goals for the school year.
Wishing you a great week!
With Jesus at my side,
Lana Rocheford
Principal
Thank you for supporting Disaster Preparedness
We are almost all set with our comfort foods that we place in our emergency bins. If you haven't already brought in your items, we will still take them until Friday! These items support students should an emergency arise. Each year, we replenish the supplies and throw out expired snacks. Your contribution helps us keep updated foods handy and available.
The school is also stocked with emergency food, water, and shelter supplies in the event of a major disaster. We are prepared to be a shelter for our school community for a short time if needed. We check these items yearly as well and restock them.
Thursday night, 10/17, at 7 p.m., we welcome Hank Morten as our guest speaker to discuss how we at Assumption School have prepared for emergencies but also what you at home can do to best prepare. We hope you can attend for a free dress pass and parent hour!
All of this is in preparation for our Disaster Dismissal, an event taking place NEXT WEDNESDAY. Please read the information below as this is a MANDATORY PICK UP day so parents, teachers, staff and students can practice our reunification procedures in the event of a major disaster or emergency. Thank you for your help.
This Sunday (10/20) is a School Sponsored Mass hosted by our 7th Grade
Students wearing their school uniforms and attending the 10 a.m. Mass this Sunday will receive a free dress pass and parents will receive a parent hour.
How does it work:
- Plan to attend the 10 a.m. Mass in-person with your student in FULL UNIFORM.
- At the end of the Mass, look for a staff person who will have Free Dress Passes to give to students.
- Place your LAST NAME and Grade(s) on the Free Dress Pass.
- The student turns in the free dress pass on the ASSIGNED SCHOOL MASS FREE DRESS DAY on the PASS to your students' teacher to count you as a family who participated. (only one hour per family not per student).
Small print: Only in-person school- or class-sponsored Assumption Parish Sunday Masses count toward service hours. Those masses are on our school calendar and are usually twice a month.

Hey, congrats! You got to the end. Way to go! Fun fact: Native Americans spoke more than 300 languages. North America was home to a huge number of spoken languages prior to colonization: more than 300, with as many as 500 spoken across the continent. Source: History.com
