Dear Friends and Family of Assumption School,
In an hour or two, I will join our Assumption School community in the church for our Annual Christmas Concert. This long tradition brings the joy and gift of song to all our families! Thank you to Mr. Vaughan for his efforts not just to pick amazing music for tonight but also to work with the parish to make it sounds so beautiful through the new parish sound system. We are also grateful to all our students for their enthusiasm in sharing their beautiful voices with us!
This week marks the second week of Advent with the theme of Peace.
From “vocabulary.com": Peace is a stress-free state of security and calmness that comes when there is no fighting or war, everything is co-existing in perfect harmony and freedom.”
There are so many opportunities for students to practice peace amongst their classmates, with their siblings and parents, even with their closest friends. Being peacemakers is a learned behavior and modeled in all the spaces of a student’s life. But it is not easy. This week, our prayer and our focus should be one of peace.
How can we teach PEACE to our students:
- Practice Active Listening: Encourage students to truly listen to others without interrupting. Understanding different perspectives is crucial for resolving conflicts.
- Develop Empathy: Help students cultivate empathy by encouraging them to put themselves in others' shoes. This can be achieved through discussions, role-playing, or even volunteering in the community.
- Promote Open Communication: Create an environment where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and concerns. Open communication helps prevent misunderstandings and allows for peaceful resolution of conflicts.
- Conflict Resolution Skills: Teach students effective conflict resolution skills, such as compromise, negotiation, and finding common ground. These skills are valuable not only in school but throughout life.
- Cultivate a Culture of Respect: Emphasize the importance of treating others with respect. Encourage students to appreciate diversity and value different opinions and backgrounds.
- Promote Inclusivity: Celebrate diversity and inclusivity. This can help reduce prejudice and build a sense of unity among students.
- Educate on Conflict Origins: Help students understand the root causes of conflicts. This knowledge can lead to a more informed and compassionate approach when addressing issues.
- Promote Nonviolent Communication: Teach students the principles of nonviolent communication, focusing on expressing feelings and needs without blame. This approach can contribute to a more positive and understanding atmosphere.
- Lead by Example: Encourage students to exemplify peacemaking behaviors in their daily interactions. Positive behavior from influential individuals can have a ripple effect on the entire school community.
- Organize Peace building Activities: Engage students in activities that promote peace and cooperation, such as group projects, community service, or events focused on conflict resolution.
- Encourage Reflection: Prompt students to reflect on their own actions and the impact they have on others. This self-awareness can lead to personal growth and a more harmonious community.
Next week we will celebrate the third week of Advent with the theme of Joy! Joy comes in so many ways for our students next week as we prepare for our holiday break starting on December 22. A reminder that there is NO EXTENDED CARE on Thursday, December 21, after school, so our faculty and staff can enjoy our Christmas celebration together. We also start our Christmas Break on December 22 with NO SCHOOL until January 8.
Our applications for NEW and PROSPECTIVE students will officially begin THIS FRIDAY, December 15. Only prospective students apply for the 2024-2025 school year, all current students will be re-registering for 2024-2025 in February 2024. Please share our admissions information with any friends or family that have NEW 23-24 TK students or prospective students in grades Kindergarten through Grade 8 starting December 15.
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas Concert tonight.
Sincerely,
Lana Rocheford
