Assumption Life: Volume 5/Issue 18 November 29, 2023
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
Special Prayer
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of the beloved friend of Assumption School and Parish, Mr. George Brandt. George was an important member of our parish, alumni parent and grandparent of Assumption School, and supporter of our community. We kindly request your prayers for the repose of his soul and strength for his grieving family during this difficult time.
Lord, George is gone now from this earthly dwelling, and has left behind those who mourn his absence. Grant that we may hold his memory dear, never bitter for what we have lost nor in regret for the past, but always in hope of the eternal Kingdom where you will bring us together again. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Together we can

PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
We, at Assumption School, are committed members of a diverse Catholic community who believe Christianity is an integral part of each person’s daily life. In keeping with this belief is the understanding that every facet of a child’s education should nurture their growth as Christians. Parents, as primary educators of their children, work in partnership with teachers to promote learning by providing developmentally appropriate instruction and creative experiences
to educate the whole child. It is in this spirit of fellowship that children, parents, teachers, staff, clergy and parishioners form the faith-filled community of Assumption School.

Dear Families and Friends of Assumption School,
Today, I had the pleasure of meeting with every student in Kindergarten through 8th grade to review their Trimester 1 report cards. I had great conversations about their goals, their successes, and their plan to continue working hard in the next trimester. It takes all day but this time is precious as it gives me a chance to really support student learning.
Report cards are a report of student progress so far in grade level standards that have been introduced. In grades 6 - 8, students are given traditional grades on an A though F grade scale. Adults are more comfortable with traditional grades used in high schools and universities. While getting straight "A"s can be exciting for students, all students who worked hard and received "B"s and "C"s should also be celebrated for a job well done!
Standards-based report cards in Kindergarten through fifth grade are not like the traditional grades. Please take a look at our Parent Student Handbook to understand the standards-based grading scale. This scale indicates the level to which students have mastered a given standard, NOT the percent correct on a given assessment. I shared with Kinder through 5th grade students today that they should be proud of their performance in the first trimester especially if they have scores indicating they are on track to mastery of grade level standards. Those scores could be 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0.
We also have provided STAR reports for our November assessments. These parent reports provide families with an update since their September benchmark. Our next assessment window is in February.
And finally, we provided reminders to families with students who had four or more tardies some tips and tricks for getting to school on time. Those who have ZERO-TARDIES for the first trimester receive FREE DRESS THURSDAY, November 30.
It is a jam-packed report card envelope. And you only return the report card envelope signed by the parent/guardian and keeping all the items inside at home for your records. Our next report or progress is January 24 with second trimester progress reports.
It is November 29th and already I am feeling the pressures of the holidays pressing on my schedule, my attitude, and my interactions with others. So it was wonderful to take a look at the calendar and make time to remember that next Sunday begins ADVENT -- a time of preparation and patience. There are four events might help you find the time to pause and reflect in community with those in our parish and remember this is a time to prepare the way.
- Sunday, December 2: Assumption Parish welcomes the beginning of Advent with our Annual Tree Lighting and Carols at the Mary Seese Plaza at 5 p.m. Join us as we light the community tree and look for your student's ornament.
- Thursday, December 7: Assumption Parish's Annual Women's Candlelight Retreat is at 6:30 p.m. at the Church. This wonderful event hosted by the Cursillo Women's Group of Assumption is the kind of space you might need for yourself.
- Tuesday, December 12: Assumption Parish celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas with an evening Mass and celebration at 6:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, December 13: Our School Christmas Concert is BACK at our Church. Students have been preparing a special collection of songs to bring in the holiday spirit directed by Mr. Vaughan. This event begins at 6:30 p.m. We ask all students to wear their Sunday Christmas best for this event.
So much to celebrate and to join together. Please read our entire newsletter! There are so many fun opportunities for your family to find the joy and peace of the season.
In God's Love,
Lana Rocheford
Principal
St. Nick's Boutique Envelopes go home tomorrow
Don't forget that THIS FRIDAY, students should bring a monetary donation and shopping list for our annual St. Nick's Boutique. Envelopes will be sent home Thursday, November 30. You place your donation into the envelope and the students will shop for some great gifts for their family and loved ones. If you can't find the envelope, send the cash or check in a regular envelope labeled St. Nick's Boutique. It is the HIGHLIGHT of the season and students learn how to focus on giving during this season!
