Assumption Life: Volume 5/Issue 16 November 15, 2023
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
To be grateful is to recognize
The love of God in everything
He has given us –
And He has given us everything.
Every breath we draw
Is a gift of His love,
Every moment of existence
Is a grace,
For it brings immense graces from Him
– Thomas Merton
Please pray for these friends of Assumption School:
George Brandt
Lonnie Ilmberger
Together we can
Small Steps
Break tasks down to allow children to experience success.
Example - A preschooler struggles to write his or her name:
1) Model correct pencil grip.
2) Work on one letter at a time. You do one and then let your child do one.
3) Teach the skill but don't do the work for him or her.
4) Children give up the belief that they can't when they achieve small steps.

HANDBOOK HELPER
APPOINTMENTS
Students arriving late or leaving early for medical or dental appointments will receive an excused
absence only if dated forms are brought from the doctor or dentist stating the time spent there.
These students will not be marked tardy or receive partial day absences. Only verified medical
and/or dental appointments are considered excused partial day absences. The verified
medical/dental appointment forms are due upon the student’s return from the appointment and
will not be considered after the end of the trimester.

Dear Families and Friends,
OH EM GEE! Rain or shine our students made good on the promise to be healthy and happy to all our supporters who donated over $58,000 to our Together We Can Fund Fun Run! Our Together We Can Fund efforts help to offset cost to educate your child and the tuition you pay. Did you know that Assumption School's income is 80 percent tuition and fees from families and 20 percent fundraising and other income? Did you know that 80 percent of our expenses are faculty and staff salaries and benefits? And 20 percent of the expenses are for operating expenses like textbooks, supplies, technology maintenance, and programming costs. With this community effort, we are supporting our school this year and for the future.
I hope your students came home today tired from running 40 (ish) laps enjoying the music, rain, clouds, sprinkles, and a bit of blue sky. God blessed us with a little water during our day but mostly kept the clouds away so kids to walk, dance, run, limbo, electric slide, and cheer.
Thanks to the amazing Class of 2024 who take a leadership role in the Fun Run leading cheers, stretches, and helping students get those laps down. We have some great pictures on our Facebook story. Follow us here! We are still accepting donations through the weekend. Students who earned prizes for the event will be getting them in the first week of December. Together, we can do great things!
Last week marked the end of the first trimester at Assumption School. We are 247 students with their families with 39 faculty and staff working hard together to create a community of Christ-centered scholars. Our teachers and support staff have worked to make sure routines and procedures lead to effective learning through the year. We have introduced ourselves, celebrated our community, supported each other, and it all leads to being a place that many say feels like home. Students are working hard, making mistakes, helping each other, and helping the world. Now it is time to be patient and allow for the purposeful and intentional learning conditions to do their work in the second and third trimesters.
We are excited for our second trimester starting with our amazing Fun Run today, our Friendsgiving PTG Social hosted by the Parish Staff on Thursday, and continuing with our Thanksgiving Prayer Service on Tuesday led by our Campus Ministry Team. In our newsletter there are events celebrating the Advent Season starting with our St. Nick's Boutique service learning event benefiting Davis Street Preschool and Building Futures and our participation in It's A Wonderful Night San Leandro both on December 1.
Please take a look at our amazing events calendar! These special events are the memory makers of our community!
I hope to see our TK and Kindergarten families at our annual TK/K Information Night. This night is designed to be a fun night with our current and prospective TK and Kindergarten families. We will have activities led by volunteer 7th and 8th graders and opportunities to talk with teachers and me! Best part, PTG is serving PIZZA! We would love to have our current families come and talk about their experience with our prospective families. We also are looking for about 15 volunteer 7th and 8th grade students who can help out. 7th and 8th graders should let their teachers know they are interested OR send me an email. We are proud to show off our student leaders! All families can RSVP here to let us know you are coming ... and to get that pizza order right!
In Christ's Love,
Lana Rocheford
Principal
Report Cards for First Trimester given out November 29
A reminder that First Trimester Report Cards will be passed out on Wednesday, November 29 to your students. Inside the report card envelope will be the report card, first trimester STAR assessment parent reports, and for those with excessive tardies, a tardy notification.
According to our handbook, excessive tardiness is being late four (4) times per trimester. It is so important to make sure and arrive at school by 7:55 a.m. Students are considered late when the 8 a.m. bell rings and they are not in their assembly lines.

Hey, congrats! You got to the end. Way to go! Fun fact: There are four towns in the United States named “Turkey.” They can be found in Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, and North Carolina.
Joining our Liturgies as non-Catholic
We love welcoming our non-Catholic parents, families and friends to our religious services, called Mass or Liturgy, regularly to watch their students sing, share reflections, or read from scripture. The public speaking opportunities for our students at Mass help them in so many different ways – most importantly about being a part of a faith community. We enjoy and encourage all our students to learn and celebrate with us during this time.
A reminder for our non-Catholic friends that the Eucharist (breaking and sharing of unleavened bread consecrated as the body of Christ) is a sacred sacrament which takes place during the Catholic Mass. During the service of Mass, prayers are said and Catholics confess their sins. They are given bread by the priest and wine. Transubstantiation is a Catholic belief that the bread and the wine become the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ.
All who attend Mass are invited to participate in different ways. As a mutual respect for all beliefs, we ask those students, parents, and friends that are non-Catholic or have not participated in the Sacrament of First Eucharist to come to the ministers for a blessing during the Celebration of a Eucharist (close to the end of the service). They show this by crossing their arms over their chests. The ministers offer a blessing. A slight bow of the head in acknowledgement or saying “Amen” is welcome.
We are grateful for the opportunity to share our faith. If you are non-Catholic and would like to become a part of the Catholic Church, you can contact Assumption Parish for more information at (510) 352-1537.
