Assumption Life: Volume 5/Issue 14 November 1, 2023
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
A Prayer Meditation for All Saints Day
We give you thanks, O God, for all the saints who ever worshiped you Whether in brush arbors or cathedrals, Weathered wooden churches or crumbling cement meeting houses Where your name was lifted and adored.
We give you thanks, O God, for hands lifted in praise: Manicured hands and hands stained with grease or soil, Strong hands and those gnarled with age Holy hands Used as wave offerings across the land.
We thank you, God, for hardworking saints; Whether hard-hatted or steel-booted, Head ragged or aproned, Blue-collared or three-piece-suited They left their mark on the earth for you, for us, for our children to come.
Thank you, God, for the tremendous sacrifices made by those who have gone before us. Bless the memories of your saints, God. May we learn how to walk wisely from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love.
Amen
Please pray for these friends of Assumption School:
Janica Paustian
Betty Jang
George Brandt
Danny O’Neill
Lonnie Ilmberger
Together we can
Show Faith
When you show faith in your children they develop courage and faith in themselves.
1) Instead of rescuing, lecturing, or fixing.
say, “I have faith in you to handle this.”
2) Children develop their problem-solving skills and disappointment muscles through experiences.
3) Validate feelings: "I know you are upset. I would be too. I have faith in you."

DIOCESE OF OAKLAND STATEMENT OF TECHNOLOGICAL USE POLICY
The Diocese of Oakland recognizes the various ways, both positive and negative, that students
can use technology both in school and at home. Students in our schools should always strive to
use technology in a responsible and ethical way as they work toward becoming responsible
citizens of our global community. As a community of faith that embraces technology, we
recognize the following:
- Words transmitted using the Internet and related technologies are published materials, available for worldwide access, and are public documents.
- The values of dignity and respect for every person apply to all of our interactions with each other, be they in person or by virtual means.
- Using technology to publish opinions which are obscene, work against the values of dignity and respect of each person, or bring harm to the individual as well as to our school community are contrary to the mission of each of the schools.
- The unauthorized posting of any image, photo, or video taken at school or at school- sponsored field trips or activities is prohibited.
- The Diocese of Oakland discourages students from using technology in irresponsible ways both at school and at home and will hold students responsible for their published words. Students who use technology in ways that are contrary to our mission will face disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion.

Dear Friends and Families of Assumption School,
Wow, we had a great time on Tuesday! Thank you to SLT, the MCs of our annual parade, as well as the parent volunteers who hosted and brought snacks for the class parties. We can't forget the faculty and staff who had lots of fun in the classrooms for a wonderful October 31.
This transition into November marks an important one for our Catholic faith with the Feast of All Souls as well as the celebration of Dia de los Muertos this Thursday. On Thursday, the school will be attending 8:30 a.m. Mass and in school uniforms. This Mass is hosted by our 8th grade and will reveal our Faith Family Saints Banners - an annual tradition. We welcome you to this celebration!
Our Dia de los Muertos classroom altars, created by Assumption’s Spanish teacher Mrs. Contreras are on display until Thursday, November 3. Thank you to Mrs. Contreras for allowing students to share their loved ones they wanted to remember. Thank you to Mrs. Baldovinos, grandmother of the Lopez family in Grades 1, 3, 4, and 8, who came to decorate Sugar Skulls with different classes in the school.
After a VERY exciting Halloween on Tuesday and with students likely recovered from an amazing Halloween night, on Wednesday, teachers and staff came together for our annual professional development. We gathered in prayer to celebrate the Feast of All Saints with Assumption Parish, then got to work with a focus on STAR Renaissance Data Analysis as well as our Diocesan anti-harassment and anti-discrimination training. Thank you to our school families for allowing us to dedicate quality work time to these efforts.
We are gearing up for our annual Fun Run which is on November 15. Students will be running for prizes and class incentives! We will need your help to spread the word to friends and families to donate to our Together We Can Fund. Our fundraising efforts allow us to keep tuition affordable but also have great programs like our Maker Space, Introduction to Spanish, split Math classes, Living Lab expansion, and more! After the fantastic Festival, we are about $50,000 to our $250,000 goal for the year. Please look for your donation page in your email or reach out to [email protected] for questions! Thank you!
Next Thursday marks the end of the first trimester of the school year. For many of our teachers, this means receiving summative assessments to evaluate learning. It is important to work in partnership with our teachers to support student learning. We will be closing grades on November 10 and preparing report cards for disbursement in the first week of December.
Have a great week!
With God’s Love on the Feast of All Saints,
Lana Rocheford
Principal
Second STAR Assessment window opens this week
The Renaissance STAR Assessment window for the end of the first trimester is in progress for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade in Assumption School along with other Diocese of Oakland Catholic Schools. This assessment is the second of four testing windows throughout the year. We hope to use this November assessment to gauge learning so far and get a better understanding of student growth. Teachers will continue to use these assessments to inform their lesson planning for students. Teachers will send out an assessment schedule to let you know when your students will take their assessments from November 2 to November 18.
We ask that students are in school daily with a good breakfast, good night’s sleep, and readiness to learn. After analyzing the assessment results in professional learning groups as a faculty, we will share the November report with families with the first report card.
From Renaissance Learning’s STAR Assessment Webpage:
Star Assessments are short tests that provide teachers with personalized learning data for each student.
Star tests are computer adaptive, which means they adjust in difficulty to each answer students provide. This helps teachers get the best data to help students in the shortest amount of testing time (about one-third of the time other tests require).
Students may take a Star test for early literacy, math, or reading. Teachers analyze the data they receive from Star Assessments to learn what students already know and what they are ready to learn next, to monitor student growth, and to determine which students may need additional help.
Star Assessments are research-based and scientifically proven to help teachers guide each student on their unique path to proficiency.

Hey, congrats! You got to the end. Way to go! Fun fact: It’s impossible to hum while holding your nose. You just tested it, didn’t you? Normally, when you hum, the air is able to escape through your nose to create the sound, and of course, it can’t do that when you’re holding it shut.
