Assumption Life: Volume 5/Issue 13 October 25, 2023
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
Lord, you know where your children are at all times. You are the Good Shepherd who walks with His sheep in the valley and on the hills. Please be present with trick-or-treating children who would be safe crossing streets (maybe with glow sticks to see better), safe from those who want to cause harm, and stay away from the gorier neighborhood displays. And Father, for older children going out in a group, we pray they will stay together and look out for one another.
Please pray for these friends of Assumption School:
Betty Tully
Janica Paustian
Betty Jang
George Brandt
Danny O’Neill
Lonnie Ilmberger
Together we can
Sense of Humor
Humor can help parents and children lighten up.
1) Remember to laugh and have fun.
2) "Here comes the tickle monster to get kids who don't pick up toys."
3) When kids are fighting, gently tackle them and say, "Pig Pile!"
4) Be sensitive to times when humor is not appropriate.

Parent Hours Alert:
School Sunday Mass THIS SUNDAY (10/29/23)
If you attend this Sunday's 6th grade sponsored Masses at 10 a.m. and your students wear their school uniform, you can earn a parent hour and your student can earn a free dress. All are welcome!
How does it work:
- Attend the 10 a.m. Mass this Sunday at our church with students in FULL UNIFORM.
- Look for a staff person (Mrs. Rocheford) who will give you a free dress pass for a specific day.
- Place your last name and grade on the free dress pass.
- Turn in the free dress pass on the assigned school Mass Free Dress Day to your student's teacher of the office.
- One hour per family.
It's your weekly...
HANDBOOK HELPER
Health and Wellness
We encourage students, school families and staff to: ● pray on your own, with your family, and school community. ● eat healthy, exercise, and get adequate sleep. ● balance school/work responsibilities with quality family time. ● plan regular time to do something enjoyable to focus on self-care. ● talk openly with people you trust about your feelings and concerns. ● take breaks from watching, reading or listening to news stories, especially about tragedy, pain, or suffering — including references on social media — if you are feeling overwhelmed or distressed.
Have a news item or event information you'd like to share? Email Mrs. Barbera at [email protected] with a short blurb (with links!) and a flyer (jpg or png, please) by Tuesday evening and it will be included in Wednesday's Assumption Life.
PS PDFs can be submitted but can only be included as an attachment to your news item. Thank you!

Dear Friends and Family,
We are seeing quite a few field trips this week! I wanted to share a few highlights about chaperones and volunteering on field trips:
- Chaperoning field trips count toward your parent hour requirement.
- Chaperones must fulfill the Volunteer requirements. Volunteer requirements include Virtus Safe Environment Training and Livescan clearance through the Diocese of Oakland.
- Anytime you chaperone on a field trip, please follow the teacher's expectations and supervise your assigned students fairly. Students MUST be supervisted at all times. You are a teacher's extra hands while off campus and should consider yourself responsible for your assigned students.
- Teachers try to schedule bus transportation for field trips, but those costs are increasing and can cost almost $1,000 for a full day rental added to the cost of the field trip.
- Assumption School PTG sponsors one field trip at $20 per student a year to offset the costs. Additional field trip costs are split amongst the student's families.
- Parent drivers are not preferred for field trips. If a field trip asks for parent drivers, cars need to have two adults per vehicle and adhere to Diocesan insurance requirements on file with the school office BEFORE the day of the field trip.
I hope everyone enjoys the opportunities teachers are making for off campus learning!
Speaking of pure enjoyment, our Dads Club is hosting their annual Trunk and Treat event this Saturday. Get more than one wear out of that adorable costume and bring your families! It should be great fun.
Halloween details for Assumption School on October 31 are below.
Lots of great service learning in the month of October. Campus Ministry's Otter Pops for Maui has raised over $600 in proceeds for the cause.
We had 28 participants join the Ducey family's Team Marnelle during our annual Making Strides for Breast Cancer Walk on Sunday. Assumption School added over $2,500 to Team Marnelle. Thank you for your donations.
And finally, Assumption School PTG is kicking off our Annual Together We Can Fund with the first of three events supporting our Annual Fund, the 2023 Fun Run. We are hoping each family will help raise $1,000 by spreading the word and sharing your Fun Run pages with families, friends, and supporters. Our Annual Fund helps bridge tuition to the actual cost to educate each child at Assumption School. Tuition revenue only covers about 80 percent of our operating costs for the school. The Together We Can Fund, Festival and Auction all help us raise the additional 20 percent. We ask that you spread the word to help us fund our instructional assistants, performing and fine arts classes, Spanish classes, and Maker Space experiences.
Thank you for all you do!
Sincerely,
Lana Rocheford

Altar Server Training offered by Assumption Parish
Assumption Parish is welcoming you to become an Altar Server for our church services Altar serving is a ministry offered by Assumption Church to Catholic boys and girls in grades 4th through 8th grades. An altar server helps support tasks at the altar such as fetching and carrying, ringing the altar bell, helping bring up the gifts, bringing up the book, among other things. You don't have to be a parishioner of the Church of Assumption to be trained but we do ask that you are baptized Catholic and received your First Communion.
The training series is on November 6, 7, and 13 at 3:15 - 4:15 with a Commissioning Celebration and Dinner for altar servers and families in the Rectory on November 14 at 7 p.m. Students MUST attend two of the three training days during the series. Once trained, the new altar server will be scheduled for a Mass to train with the lead altar servers. If you have any questions, please contact Dennis Burigsay by email at [email protected] OR leave a message at (510) 895-1628.

Hey, congrats! You got to the end. Way to go! Fun fact: People originally carved turnips instead of pumpkins. Jack-o'-lanterns are believed to have originated in Ireland in the 19th century—but they actually carved turnips instead of pumpkins at the time.
