Volume 4/Issue 38 Assumption Life May 3, 2023
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
O Mary, Queen of the holy Rosary, you have made this month of May a time for honoring you in a special way. As we pray the Rosary and contemplate the mysteries, help us to grow in faith, hope, and love.
You are the model of perfect discipleship, always faithful to God and obedient to His will. Help us to imitate your virtues, especially your humility, your purity, and your love for God and neighbor.
We entrust ourselves and all our intentions to your motherly care. Please intercede for us and obtain for us the graces we need to live as faithful disciples of your Son Jesus Christ.
O Mary, Queen of the May, pray for us now and always.
Amen.
Together we can
Hugs
Children do better when they feel better- and so do you.
Hugs help us feel better.
1) When your child is having a tantrum, try asking for a hug.
2) If your child says, "No," say, "I need a hug," again.
3) If your child still says no, say, "I need a hug; come find me when you are ready." (Then walk away.) You might be surprised at what happens.

Come to the Hoedown or Support our Parish
Assumption Parish is hosting an amazing community event in the hopes to also raise funds for our parish. This Saturday's Hoedown is going to be a LOT of fun. Great food, line dancing, games for the kids, and a lot of laughs.
School families who buy a ticket can get a parent hour or two for next school year by attending. Classes with the largest number of families attending will get a special treat from the parish. Please buy your tickets ... and if you can't attend, please make a donation to the parish to help them continue the growing programs that help our school and community thrive.
Free Dress Clarification
This week, please note we are hosting the following free dress days:
Tuesday (yesterday) Warrior Free Dress in honor of our amazing Warriors (some wore Lakers gear ... whatevs : ) )
Friday, May 5 SLT is hosting Western Free Dress to get ready for the Hoedown Throwdown (our Parish event on Saturday). At Friday's morning assembly, our SLT members will charge up the students with a big YEE HAW! And maybe some line dancing in anticipation of our fun Parish dinner the following night! Flannel shirts, big belt buckles, cowboy boots, cowboy hats, and jeans are welcome.
With the many free dress options this week, we have decided to not have Star Wars Free Dress on Thursday, May 4th. (But we can all enjoy the spirit of the Jedi in our school uniforms ... May the Force be with you all!)
Have some news you want to share? If you've got a school or community announcement, please email your blurb and flyer directly to Mrs. Barbera!

Dear Families and Friends,
First of all, THANK YOU to all our donors who made our Week of Giving such a great success. Yes, I know ... we didn't reach our $50,000 goal but with creativity, partnership, and a lot of love for our community, we can make sure our school continues to THRIVE. We have exceeded expectations in our Auction, Festival and Fun Run this year. So while we don't get the Churro Truck ... the school's operating budget for this school year is going to be okay.
A huge thanks to our Fundraising Committee headed by Adriana Rivas and her amazing group of creative, fun, and committed fundraising committee members. They thought of the condiment challenge and the magician. They create the Just Giving pages for our events and they help keep tuition reasonable by creating opportunities for our larger community to support our school! Thank you!
It was amazing to see a time honored tradition of the May Crowning this Monday hosted by our wonderful Class of 2023. We are so proud of our Class of 2023. This was their last Mass until their Baccalaureate Mass in June. We have enjoyed a full year of reflections and faith family leadership from our 8th Grade. In the coming weeks, they will continue to finish their projects and prepare for their Rite of Passage Exit Interviews that take place starting May 15. Graduation events will begin for them after Memorial Day weekend. They are ready to pass the torch to our Class of 2024.
This Sunday at our 10 a.m. Mass, the Church of the Assumption BVM, will celebrate the sacrament of First Holy Communion. Eleven of our second graders will be receiving their first Holy Communion. This is also a Sunday School Mass. Students who wear their school uniform and our First Communicants will receive a free dress pass for a later date. We are so excited for students and families participating in this important sacrament. Thank you to Ms. Ignacio for her work in the classroom and Mrs. Mary Schirmer and Mr. Jim Brady for their work with families this year!
Say a little prayer for our Fifth Grade class and Ms. Bartlett as they spend the night tonight at the USS Hornet. This STEM and history field trip is an overnight event with dinner and breakfast for our fifth graders, their teacher, and their brave parent chaperones. Tomorrow, after spending the night on a pretty amazing ship, the 5th grade will be home recovering.
Next week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. (Yes! I know ... National Teacher Appreciation DAY is May 2 and National Teacher Appreciation Week is the first FULL week of May). We could also say that May is "National Wow It Is Already May" Month for teachers. Room parents are sending a list of ways to appreciate teachers (totally optional but fun!) and I hope you might be able to join in the appreciation. Keep a look out for the email from your room parents.
And finally, tomorrow, Thursday, May 4th, at 6 p.m. we are welcoming our 5th grade parents and new prospective junior high parents to our annual Junior High Orientation hosted by our JH team. Please note that ONLY 5th grade parents and NEW junior high parents need to attend. Our 6th and 7th grade families are already good to go for next year!
Together we can do great things!
May the Force Be With You.

Hey, congrats! You got to the end. Way to go! Fun fact: On this day in 1959 the first Grammy Awards were presented, and the winners included Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and the Kingston Trio.
