Volume 4/Issue 33 Assumption Life
March 22, 2023
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
We continue our prayers for Mr. Mason’s family, friends, and the Bishop O’Dowd community as they navigate the process of grieving and healing.
Fourth Week of Lent
For the weeks of lent we will be sharing a link to a 3 minute retreat where you can take a short prayer break right at your computer or phone. Spend some quiet time reflecting on a Scripture passage. After each screen, a Continue button will appear. Click it when you are ready to move on. If you are new to online prayer, the basic timing of the screens will guide you through the experience.
Week 4 - 3 minute retreat - Growing in Holiness
We risk making ourselves unhealthy when we stay down in the dirt with “any swarming creature that crawls on the ground.” God is the ultimate source of holiness and to become holy we need to stay close to God.
According to my dictionary, the words “holy” and “healthy” come from the same root. I like thinking of holiness in terms of health; otherwise I could get bogged down by a concept of holiness that is ethereal and removed from everyday life. As Hildegard of Bingen reminds us, “The truly holy person welcomes all that is earthly.”
Most of us don’t think of ourselves as holy, but that is what we’re called to become. - Paul Brian Campbell, SJ
Together we can
Eye to Eye
It isn't respectful (and doesn't work) to sit on the couch and yell at your child from across the room.
1) Stop whatever you are doing. Get up and get close enough to your child to see his or her eyes.
2) You'll notice that you speak more softly when you make a respectful effort to see your child's eyes.
3) Model eye-to-eye in your adult relationships.

Dear Friends and Family of Assumption School,
I was so happy to see so many families attend our yearly State of the School last Thursday. I think it is so important for families to know the history, impact, and vision of the school! Thank you for joining with me on that journey. Here is a link to the slide deck.
I am excited that our Parish has provided so many opportunities for Lenten reflection and prayer including so many successful Eat Pray Give Fridays hosted by the ministries of Assumption Parish. If you are interested we still have two left upcoming but the times have changed to 5:30 p.m. on both days.
The weather has truly been relentless and I know many of you have either suffered power outages, downed trees, or lots of water pooling in roadways, homes, or neighborhoods. Please continue to pray in gratitude for the water but also for the safety and health of those affected by these rains.
And finally, next Monday is International Day! This exciting day is an opportunity for our community to celebrate the world with the theme of food! Our students will travel around the world in our gym. The festivities begin with an all-school assembly in the gym beginning promptly at 8:10 a.m. A zoom link is in our International Day flier today.
Afterward, each class will visit the gym and listen to presentations by the 7th grade Docents about the many countries represented. Students can wear ethnic/cultural clothes connected to their own culture, wear the colors of the country's flag, or wear free dress. Thank you so much to our coordinators, Katherine Rubio and Melesha Owens, as well as all our volunteers to make this event take place.
In gratitude,
Lana Rocheford
Principal
Holy Week: Wednesday, the Seder Meal
We are excited to celebrate Holy Week as a community with different events. On April 5 at 1:15 p.m., the 7th Grade will be hosting a Seder/Last Supper Prayer Service. This prayer service is an experience of scripture, theater, interaction, and food as the 7th graders take us on the journey of Jesus as he celebrates the Seder with his disciples and the 8th graders gather their faith families to taste the foods (or representations of the foods) of a Jewish Seder.
We are asking each student to bring the following items to share as a school. Non-perishable items should be brought by April 5 (Tuesday) and perishable items should be brought in by the morning of April 6 (Wednesday):
- 8th Grade: Blanket (for faith family to sit on/picnic style), large tray
- 7th Grade: a six- or four-pack of individually packaged apple sauce with cinnamon
- 6th/5th Grade: a six- or four-pack of individually packaged apple sauce with cinnamon
- 4th Grade: one box Matzah (does NOT have to be Kosher)’
- 3rd Grade: 6 hard-boiled eggs
- 2nd Grade: 15 pieces of cut and washed celery or a bag of parsley
- 1st Grade: Bottle of grape juice to give to about 10 students (need 28 total)
- K: Paper plates (20) & Napkins (20)
- TK: A box of spoons (20)/small Dixie cups (20-30)
Thank you so much!

You registered online and paid your fees for the 2023-2024 school year and that is awesome! Didn't do that yet? Hey ... get on that! Be a part of the mission, the excitement, and the vision of 2023-2024!
Hey, congrats! You got to the end. Way to go! Fun fact: On this day in 1972 the U.S. Senate approved the Equal Rights Amendment, which stated, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex”, but it failed to be ratified by the requisite majority of 38 states before the deadline.
