Volume 4/Issue 29 Assumption Life
February 22, 2023
Our Mission
We are Assumption Catholic School, a ministry of the Church of the Assumption. As a diverse community, we excel in academics and model Christ where each individual is safe, nurtured, respected, and treasured.
Together we pray
Prayer for Ash Wednesday
Merciful God, you called us forth from the dust of the earth; you claimed us for Christ in the waters of baptism. Look upon us as we enter these Forty Days bearing the mark of ashes, and bless the journey through the desert of Lent to the font of rebirth. As we remember our mortality and seek penitence today, we know you to be a God who is rich in forgiveness and abounding in steadfast love, love that culminates in eternal life with you. Guide our steps this Lent, so that we might find greater fulfillment in your promises and better serve others with a heart that’s reflective of you. Amen.
Together we can
Distract & Redirect
Distraction and redirection can change the energy of a situation.
1) Remove your child from the TV knobs and redirect, "You can play with the blocks."
2) Distract by becoming the tickle monster.
3) Admit your part in a power struggle, and start again after some time-out.
4) In the middle of an argument, tell your teenager you are on his or her side.

Dear Friends and Families of Assumption School,
It is AUCTION WEEK! Assumption School tries to provide lots of fun opportunities for our community to support our school, from the Festival to the Fun Run to the Week of Giving. To help us bridge the gap between tuition income (80% of our income) and the cost to educate which includes faculty and staffing (80% of our expenses), we look to these events to help us! This weekend’s Auction is probably our most fun for our parents, friends, grandparents, aunts and uncles! (The adults in our lives!) I am so happy to hear so many of our grades are going to be represented at this event! The bidding is always so exciting! I hope if you are unable to make the event, you can support us with our online silent auction and class gifts! Don’t miss out on these one-of-a-kind items that are sure to be a highlight.
I have been out with a pretty crazy cold since last Saturday. I was sad to have missed so many great events happening with our CYO sports, our parish, and our community as we prepare for this Lenten Season. There were moments that I wish I could’ve experienced with our students this week including our CYO games this weekend and TK Mardi Gras parade on Tuesday. I was happy to have watched on Facebook the Ash Wednesday Mass from home. The 8th graders did an excellent job leading us in our service including the beautiful litany of Faith Family saints at the start, their reflections on St. Joseph and St. Mary of Magdalene, as well as their gift of song throughout. Thank you to our 7th grade for helping their Faith Families during the Mass when the 8th grade were in the choir. Their leadership continues to grow and grow!
Speaking of school leaders, our 6th graders and Mr. Poon will be heading to the redwoods next Monday to Caritas Creek Outdoor Ministry, our overnight science camp run by Catholic Charities of San Francisco. This long tradition of sending our 6th grade students is a bit of a rite of passage to leadership! I am so excited for them! We will wish them goodbye as a school on Monday morning when they board the bus and head on their way to Caritas Creek in Occidental, CA.
Finally, we have a staffing update we will share in the classrooms tomorrow but wanted to let you know. Last Friday, February 17, 2023 was Mr. Darren Deonigi’s last day at Assumption School. We wish him the very best and we are grateful for his 12 years of service as the PE teacher, SLT moderator, and tech coordinator to our school. I am actively searching to replace Mr. D and will share any news regarding progress on filling this open PE position as soon as I can.
In Christ’s Love,
Lana Rocheford
Principal
Fall CYO Trojan News
We are so proud of our Fall sports teams, especially those who qualified to play in the playoffs last weekend. Congratulations to our 4th grade and 7rth grade boys basketball teams and our 7th and 8th grade girls volleyball teams for making it all the way to the league and diocesan playoffs respectively. Special congrats to our 7th grade girls who made it to the second round of playoffs for the Diocese. Our teams played well and displayed true Trojan spirit!
Kid's Auction Raffle Last Day Tomorrow
The Assumption School Auction committee will have their final day of kids raffle ticket sales tomorrow. The student raffle is always a fun way to get into the auction spirit for our students. Some great summer and fun baskets are available raffle to all students including a sports basket, a money tree, and a summer fun basket. Purchase your tickets online tonight for students to receive them tomorrow by the 11 a.m. deadline. Students in each class will be putting in the last tickets during special times tomorrow at school. The raffle is on Friday during morning assembly.
Auction News
This Saturday is a welcome back to our live Auction and Gala supporting our school! The event, at the Metropolitan Golf Course in San Leandro, will not only have live DJ music, food, and camaraderie but also an amazing LIVE auction with MC Brian Copeland as well as a real auctioneer! This event is about supporting Assumption School and especially looking to improve our school for the future with a focus this year on raising enough money to improve our play structure, “The Ark.” This year’s Fund-A-Need will focus on completing what Auctions of the past have started. We have raised quite a bit over the years at the Auction for this project (about $35,000), but, it has never been quite enough to get us to cover the renovations it requires. Let’s try to meet this goal and make the changes we need to the ARK for the future.
If you were unable to purchase tickets for this event, you can still support our school by bidding on our silent auction items or class projects. These items will be available until Saturday when the silent auction closes promptly at 7 p.m. Click here for all the Silent and Class Auction items.
STAR Screening for the Second Trimester began February 21
In the coming weeks, your students’ homeroom teacher will be preparing for the Second Trimester STAR screening for reading and math. Please be sure your child gets good sleep and eats well during this time. These tests have provided important information about student learning and needs. We spend time as a faculty reviewing and adjusting our teaching to focus on specific needs of students in our classrooms. The administration uses this information to form long-term learning goals and celebrate achievements. This window ends March 10.
CALENDAR CHANGE
To accommodate our WCEA Visiting Team, we are moving our minimum day from Friday to Thursday, the last day of our visit and the day of our final report. We are sorry for any inconvenience. Extended Care will be available.
March 9 MINIMUM DAY (12 p.m. dismissal)
March 10 FULL DAY (3 p.m. dismissal)

Hey, congrats! You got to the end. Did you know? The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is normally reserved for indulgence and revelry (think: Mardi Gras), but in Iceland, the fun doesn't stop there. The first day of Lent in Iceland, called Öskudagur, is similar to Halloween in the U.S. Kids dress up in costumes and tour their neighborhoods singing songs in exchange for candy. The holiday even makes room for mischief—in one fading tradition, kids will sometimes pin "ash bags" (often filled with grains instead of ash) to the backs of their peers when they aren't looking.
