Every year, the Assumption 6th graders take a week away from school for an exciting field trip to Caritas Creek in Occidental, CA! From February 2nd to February 6th, students visited Caritas Creek for many special reasons.
Caritas offers lots of nature experiences and fun activities! While there, students learn about “Caritas style,” which is when everyone stands next to somebody new and eventually becomes friends with them. Sixth-grader Vivian O. said, “We had to find someone we hadn't met before and partner with them. I liked that we had to do this because I met new people who I became friends with.” Vivian loved many aspects of Caritas Creek, including canoeing, hiking, playing gaga ball, and spending time with her cabin group.
Unlike Vivian, 7th-grader Bella H. experienced Caritas Creek for a second time during summer break. She shared, “You get to have new experiences, meet new people, make lots of memories, and connect with other people.” Bella also mentioned “Serendipity,” a special part of Caritas centered on learning more about people’s lives. Just like Bella, 8th-grader Sarah R. loved Caritas Creek when she went in 6th grade, noting that she was “excited to be away from home, and that Caritas was a chance to be more with my friends and learn more about people and nature.”
At Caritas, students have an incredible time participating in community meals, cabin groups, and outdoor activities. Ultimately, it gives both students and teachers a wonderful opportunity to experience the joy of nature and hiking entirely without electronics.

🗞️ Introducing the Assumption Student News Lab!
Over the past few weeks, our creative and curious junior high students stepped behind the camera, the microphone, and the notepad as campus reporters in the Assumption Student News Lab.
Rather than sitting through traditional lectures, these young journalists managed their own newsroom and mastered a professional production pipeline:
-
The Journalistic Lens: Learning to spot timely, impactful school stories.
-
Professional Interviewing: Crafting open-ended questions and conducting respectful campus interviews.
-
The Inverted Pyramid: Structuring news articles with engaging headlines and factual openings.
-
Ethics & Integrity: Rigorously editing their work for accuracy and fairness.
Over the next few weeks, we are incredibly proud to feature their finalized news articles right here in Assumption Life. Get ready for a student-led look at our vibrant campus life—from sports highlights and teacher spotlights to behind-the-scenes glimpses of school traditions!
