Alumni Spotlight: Dragon Leadership in Action

Bishop O’Dowd students are taking the lead on one of the most pressing issues facing schools today: the impact of digital technology on community and mental health. This spring, a dedicated group of juniors—including alumni James P. ’23 and Luke W. ’23—spearheaded a movement toward a "human-centered, prosocial school day" through the Student Committee on Technology (SCOT).

Taking the Initiative

Hand-selected from Advanced Leadership Teams, these students spent months diving deep into the research surrounding cell phone use in schools. Their journey took them beyond our campus to learn from neighboring institutions:

  • Learning from Peers: After a successful visit to Saint Ignatius, the group traveled to Saint Mary’s High School in Berkeley to observe their "bell-to-bell" phone policy firsthand.

  • Engagement with Faculty: In a powerful display of leadership, James, Luke, and their peers addressed over 100 faculty and staff members in the school theater. They spoke candidly about their personal struggles with technology and their vision for a more present, engaged campus culture.

A Message Carried by Students

The initiative gained significant momentum because it was led by students rather than administrators. Mary McInerney, Director of Technology, Data, and Innovation, noted the profound impact these young leaders had on the adult community:

"To speak thoughtfully and persuasively on something so countercultural to their generation... was truly profound. They gave us real hope for what is possible in schools and in young people today."

Building a "Phone-Free" Future

The committee didn't just look at what to take away, but what to add. In brainstorming sessions, students like James and Luke explored ideas for building community on campus through intentional spaces for face-to-face interaction and advocacy aligned with current legislative shifts, such as Assembly Bill 3216.

As these Dragons move forward, they leave a legacy of courage and vision, proving that the most effective way to change school culture is through student-led initiative. We are incredibly proud of the impact James and Luke have made on the future of the O’Dowd experience!
