3rd grade has been very excited to build owl nest boxes to donate! The project began when we found out that Sulphur Creek Nature Center needed a nest box for Artemis, one of their injured screech owl residents. The students gathered donations for supplies from their families, and Jennifer (parent of alumni Kaitlyn and Kaethen) contributed Home Depot gift cards to the cause.
Together, we had enough for the class to also build four barn owl nest boxes to donate to the City of San Leandro to post in local parks for natural rodent control! Dirk (Ryan's grandpa) cut all of the wood, while Mr. Clement and Svetlin (Sofia's dad) helped the students assemble the boxes.
What a great opportunity to get experience working with sandpaper, screwdrivers, screws, and wood. "Righty tighty, lefty loosey," Mr. Clement instructed them. This project shows that together, we truly can do great things!
