Honoring History and Culture: Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

We Celebrated Native American Heritage Month in November

What is Native American Heritage Month?

Native American Heritage Month celebrated Native Americans and their contributions to the world around us. The month was a time to celebrate the diverse cultures and histories of America's first people. Native American Heritage Month was celebrated this November (and every November) to honor the culture, and traditions of the Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities. The month was officially designated by President George H.W. Bush in 1990 to raise awareness about Native peoples. This month was also a time to learn about Native American history, and the challenges they continue to face.

A person we remembered during this time was Sacagawea. She was born in what is now Idaho and was captured by the Hidatsa tribe as a child before being traded to a French-Canadian trapper. She later became an invaluable interpreter and guide for the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Why It Matters to Our Community

Celebrating Native American Heritage Month was important to show the appreciation that our community has for Native American Peoples. It continues to be important for us to remember the diversity of Native American tribes and traditions. For many years in history, Native Americans have been mistreated, mislabeled, and unrecognized. In November, we recognized Native Americans for their vibrant culture and traditions and celebrated them to open our minds to other cultures.

Additionally, it is important for us to know what Native lands we stand on because Native American communities cared for these places long before our towns and schools existed. Learning whose land we are on helps us show respect, understand history, and build stronger, more caring communities.
