Spanish Program

The main goal of the Spanish program is to show students that learning a foreign language is doable, interesting, and fun. Visual, oral and tactile materials and methods are used because children learn in different ways and at different times. Basic vocabulary is taught along with phrases and grammar. The use of songs, chants, poems, and stories give children real-life cultural exposure to Spanish and its sounds and rhythms. This program is special because it was developed at Assumption School for Assumption students. It is tailored to their needs and can be adapted when necessary. Also, there is ongoing, supportive communication between the Spanish teacher and the regular classroom teacher. Moreover, children begin speaking Spanish at the very first class. This emphasis on the spoken word is continued throughout the primary years and followed through in the later years with the Spanish program in the upper grades. And what the children learn is very practical; they can use it in their everyday lives outside of the school environment. After all, Spanish is a language. It is meant to be spoken!
